North Goa vs. South Goa: What is the Difference Between the Two?
North Goa
The beaches, namely Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, and Vagator, are synonymous with adventure and water sports. As a result, the region has numerous flea markets and bar chains, making it the most vibrant place to be in Goa. Consequently, it is perfect for those searching for adventure and an active nightlife.
South Goa
The beaches of Palolem, Colva, and Benaulim offer more privacy and are relatively less developed. For instance, they feature unmarred sandy beaches as compared to their northern counterparts.
Old Goa
Interestingly, the fascinating town of Old Goa is geographically located between North and South Goa. However, unlike the two regions, Old Goa offers a rare glimpse into the past as the former capital of Portuguese Goa. Most notably, the ancient Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located in this region.
Moreover, since Old Goa is only 30-45 minutes away from most northern beaches, it can be an excellent place to spend a day trip or even a weekend detour. Furthermore, most common in our customized itineraries is a balance between the three regions as opposed to spending the entire holiday in one region.
When is the best time to visit Goa?
| Season | Timing | Weather | Overview |
| Winter | Nov – Feb | Warm and sunny (20C – 32C) | Peak season: Good time to visit with favorable weather. |
| Summer | Mar – May | Hot and Humid | Shoulder season: Offers cheaper hotel deals and fewer crowds. |
| Monsoon | Jun – Sept | Wet and rainy | Off-peak season: Great for nature lovers and hikers. |
The winter season (Nov – Feb) is by far the best time to visit Goa. For one, the weather is always pleasant and rarely goes below 20°C. Secondly, having stable and sunny weather, all of Goa’s nightspots are open and ready to entertain you. Moreover, visiting Goa during the off-peak season (Jun – Sept) offers fantastic opportunities for hiking and nature trails.
However, since most beaches and shacks are closed during the rainy season due to inaccessible roads and weather, it is not advisable to visit during this period. On the other hand, the summer season (Mar-May) is a shoulder season, which means cheaper hotel deals and fewer crowds. However, because winter sees the highest visitor numbers, we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

When is the best time to visit Goa?
If you love good weather and don’t mind the crowds, the peak season (Nov – Feb) is the best time to visit Goa. On the other hand, if you are willing to trade the hot weather for cheap hotel deals, the shoulder season (Mar-May) is the best option.
Are Goa’s beaches open during the rainy season?
Although most of Goa’s beaches are technically open throughout the year, the beaches are inaccessible during the monsoon season due to inaccessible roads. Resultantly, it is not recommended to plan a beach holiday during the rainy season.
